antarctica: 100-days of darkness

Day Ninety-Nine

I posted a couple photos on the socials earlier this week. Snaps of my new dorm building and the view from my new back door. In the caption I also noted that I only had two more sleeps until my first sunrise since May. After I made the post it came to mind that the truth is while the hype is around this first sunrise, we’ve also been having these extended days of almost sunrises and the sky has been absolutely magical. We can’t see it everyday because it is cloudy, overcast and stormy more often than not, but when it’s all lit up it is a sight to be seen and remembered.

If I thought I was frustrated losing the slider to my Yeti, well, I topped that frustration last night. Butterfingers, I fumbled with my Nalgene and that resulted in the entirely full bottle of water tipping out, completely, all over my open and powered on MacBook. Ugh. I turned it off almost immediately, wiped it down and turned it upside down, but it doesn’t look good. The screen is all messed up and it went into the keyboard as well. I gave it to Rickie, one of our IT wizards today, but he acknowledged there is nothing to be done about water damage. he kindly offered to take it apart and check for water under the keyboard and I am grateful for that. I will continue to hold onto hope that once it dries out completely it is salvageable, but it isn’t looking good. Sigh. In the end it is just a replaceable thing and I know that.

As far as station news…it’s still extra cold! -27F with the wind chill bringing us in at -54F at the moment. The flight was cancelled again yesterday and then again today. Everything in limbo. Everything sit and wait and see. My favorite (sarcasm). We do have a much anticipated sunrise headed our way tomorrow though! Here is hoping it’s clear enough to see it.
