Day Fifty-Eight

As it typically goes, after an unproductive day off, I had a productive ‘Monday’. Not that there is anything exciting to report, just a productive day in the store getting things a little more organized while the station is still quiet. We are creeping closer and closer to what is called WinFly. That’s the pre summer shoulder season and coming in mid-August. It will bring us our first flight, new faces and more excitingly, freshies!

WinFly is so close it is bittersweet. While I am excited to get closer to leaving the ice, I am also trying to make the most of my time left on this crazy continent. The influx in population that WinFly will bring isn’t exactly exciting as it just means the store will be busier and it’s just change in general, which is always an adjustment. It’s a constant rollercoaster of emotions down here-that’s for sure.

It was less blowy out yesterday, so I took an afternoon walk to Hut Point. While it was completely dark, the moon is was on the horizon and when I took a photo in night mode, it actually lit the sea ice up. I will post the photos on social, but know that we are still in darkness with just the slightest hint of twilight creeping in on the horizon in the afternoon. The photos are deceptive and make things look light out, but that is not the case-yet. I hadn’t been on a walk in quite some time, so it was really nice to get outside and move and to stare up at the stars. It’s so bizarre to be out on a walk at 4PM staring up at the Milky Way.

In the evening, I went to the lounge in the bog (back of the galley) for a travelogue on Patagonia in the off-season. My friend Lee put it on via a slideshow of he and his wifes travels. Seeing all the mountains and leaves and non frozen nature made me itch for more travels.

After that I headed over to Gallagher’s for Friday night karaoke. I knew the bartender was a karaoke enthusiast so I went to cover the bar when it was his turn to belt the tunes out. There were so many sign ups that he didn’t actually get up to sing, but I did slip behind the bar to help him get through the rush of last call drinks. And that’s about it for today. 🙂
