Day Forty-Seven

Just before our midwinter celebrations on Saturday, word spread that a medevac flight was going to happen this week. That’s a pretty big deal since there aren’t any flights in/our out over winter. A week or so ago, one of the carpenters over at Scott Base mangled his hand in a fan. Yuck. I guess it wasn’t healing as they hoped, and so the process of a getting a medevac began.

The rumor mill said that there were five seats on the flight. One for the medevac, two for two people who decided they want out and two for two mystery firings. They fire you the night before the flight, so no names are known. And I had no idea that quitting was a thing, but apparently it is. The guy who quit did so about three weeks ago and has just been lounging and collecting minimum wage ever since. I’d go crazy for sure.

The weather forecast kiboshed any attempted flights this week. And then by the end of the day today, word spread that the entire medevac operation had been cancelled. So everybody stays. I’m sure more details will come to light over the next couple days, but it’s all just so bizarre.
