Day Eighteen

I made it seven months and eleven days down here before I caved and put on an adult onesie. Hell hath indeed frozen over. And I guess that’s where the party is. To top it off, it was a Pokemon onesie. I have never watched Pokemon, but I have watched heaps of adult children down here grab their phones as soon as Starlink Sunday is up and running, not to call their friends or family, but to Pokemon Go. It’s bizarre and my brain can’t comprehend it. It was a right of passage putting that onesie on, though I am not sure where the passage led. Apparently, I was dressed as a Squirtle and became an honorary member of the Squirtle Squad. My eyebrows are raised.

The onesie game is strong down here. I assume that is because they are easy warm costumes. All I know is that onesies were on the packing list and I neglected to pack one. It doesn’t matter though as the station gear rental has heaps of onesies to borrow, should I ever find myself itching to wear a onesie again, which is unlikely. Back in January, I was interviewed for a Podcast and I touched on the adult onesie culture down here. When asked if I brought a onesie I replied, no I am an adult. Shortly after the podcast came out an on ice friend who shares the same sentiments about adult onesies emailed me a snap of their morning crossword clue and answer. Clue: infants outfit. Answer: onesie. It was sitting in my inbox when I got to work one morning the subject line read-proof we are the adults down here.

Stickers are also a means of tender around here. I can’t tell you how many stickers I have acquired over the past seven months, but the number is high. High enough that I will probably end up mailing them home rather than lugging them around on my post ice travels. I feel like there is something to be said about the onesie and sticker culture, but I will leave that alone because I also feel like I conveyed my tone on the topic appropriately. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fun spoiler. If the kids are happy, that’s all that matters.
